Professional Details

Short Biography

I am writer, film-maker and broadcaster based in Doncaster, Yorkshire.

Having been bitten by the communications bug at the age of 9, and making my first film at 11, I have made a career out of words, moving pictures and sounds.

A life-long walker, I am the editor of the website Walks Around Britain – the only website with video walks and podcasts. The website now has walking info, a regular blog reviewing gear and a well-listened monthly podcast too.

I am also a freelance writer specialising in walking, the great outdoors, railways, heritage, technology and film-making.

I studied Video Production at the University of Wolverhampton, and after leaving, I freelanced at various production companies, including the BBC and a broadcaster in Rome. On returning to the UK, I set-up my own production company mainly producing transport based documentaries.

Professional Activities

As a writer, I’m at home with most aspect of the outdoors – including walking and cycling – and I have particular interest in travel too, especially involving scenic railways and drives. I can also write in the areas of transport – especially railways – technology and film-making. I can write for magazines and newspapers as well as copy for websites and interpretation boards.

As a film-maker, I am the complete package, being able to produce and direct long and short form films and seeing them through from creation to completion. As a cameraman I have the vision to be able to deliver captivating images which I know will work in the edit. My passion for sound means my films are a treat for the ears too. Films for broadcast, exhibition in displays or for the web – I have experience in producing all types.

As a broadcaster I am used to the demands and requirements of directors, cameramen and sound recordists… because I am all of them. This gives me a unique insight to the production process, allowing for a better delivery on camera and in audio. I am often called upon to take part in radio features and phone-ins about outdoor and transport issues – in addition to my duties presenting the Walks Around Britain video walks and the monthly podcast.
