Short Biography

I am a backpacker and self-taught filmmaker and photographer. If you’re out and about you’ll often find me camped out in all weathers out on the hills and amongst the valleys; waiting for that fleeting moment where I can capture the landscape at its very best – something I am extremely passionate about.

I am considered a rising star of the outdoor film world, and have built a strong reputation and following in a very short time since being made redundant in a previous role 2 years ago. With a unique style and a genuine love of the outdoors my work has been in demand commercially from some of the best known names in the industry and has seen me filming and acting as photographer both throughout the UK and the Alps. My real passion, however, lies in capturing wilderness and mountains, particularly in the Lake District. A place that is dear to my heart.

I work alone for days on end, isolated and without support, in search of the definitive, and often dramatic, landscapes that have become my signature on film.

Nominated for the TGO Awards in 2012 and again in 2013 I’ve received both support and recognition throughout the outdoor world, attracting sponsorship from companies including Rab, Salomon, Terra Nova, Vaude, Force Ten and Vango to name a few – while retaining my grass roots following . After all, if it wasn’t for the public, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Professional Activities

Short, inspiring promotional videos featuring the great outdoors forms the basis of my bread and butter income along with photography of manufacturers kit in action. These can include tourism videos online or marketing imagery for a particular brand.

However, my real passion comes with producing documentaries. A long held dream of mine to inspire the wider public to the scenic delights on offer within the UK.

I produced my first feature-length video called ‘The Cairngorms in Winter with Chris Townsend’ in early 2013, which was released to critical acclaim and relied solely on funding from the general public via Kickstarter. DVDs of the film continue to sell in huge numbers nationwide.

I’m currently working on my most ambitious project yet which I’m sure will prove to be a unique inspiration to the wider public.

‘Life of a Mountain: Scafell Pike’ will be a 2 hour cinematic documentary featuring England’s highest peak through the course of a year. It will include not only the spectacle of the fells on camera I’m renowned for, but will focus on the lives of those who live, work and play around this iconic hill as well as those who help to care for this popular area.

This film is my main focus now for the coming months ahead and is due to have it’s premier at the Rheged Centre, Penrith in May 2014.
