Trekking in the Canary Islands

Paddy Dillon

The GR131 is a long-distance trek that crosses all seven of the Canary Islands. It takes a month to complete, assuming good ferry connections, and covers 350 miles. Landscapes vary from sandy deserts and rugged lava flows to pine forests and laurisilva cloud forests, as well as including truly awesome mountains and an option to include an ascent of El Teide – the highest mountain in Spanish territory. The guidebook includes detailed mapping and enough photographs to illustrate the wide variety of landscape types along the trail. Useful services and facilities are noted where they occur, and trekkers are warned when they need to be self-sufficient. The GR131 is of recent origin, yet it deserves to be one of the classic trails of the world.
