Netherlands

I am a writer, translator, geographer and map-lover who lives in Heerlen, Limburg, the most elevated part of the Netherlands. I am an active member of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival and have just completed my first book, Mapping the Mountains.

I was born in Stretford, Manchester in 1957, a stone’s throw away from Old Trafford football and cricket grounds, both of which became an integral part of my growing up in neighbouring Chorlton-cum-Hardy.

I developed a passion for maps, the outdoors and languages at an early age and went on to study Geography at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, graduating in 1979.

After several years working in publicity as a copywriter, I moved to Heerlen in 1984, swapping the moorlands of Northern England for the hills of Zuid-Limburg in the Netherlands.

In the decade that followed, I was employed on various European projects in the field of disability, before becoming a full-time self-employed translator in 1995.

Over the last 30 years I have also acquired degrees in photography and English language teaching and between 2003 and 2018, I ran Heerlen Cricket Club which played at a competitive level in both the Dutch and Belgian leagues.

Since 2010, I have been an active member of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival, likewise based in Heerlen. I organised the Mapping the Mountains exhibition in Heerlen for the 2019 festival and again in Aachen (Germany) in 2021. Following its success I was asked to write a book of the same name on mountain cartography.

Mapping the Mountains is my first book and is due to be published in Autumn 2025.

I also contributed original material for the Dutch Mountain Trail guide and was also responsible for its translation into English.
