Mostly in the Lakes but with the occasional (too occasional) foray into the Highlands

Fellrunner and ultralight-addict. Chuffed as the Isle of Sodor to pick up an OWPG award and a "highly commended" in 2024. I was a precocious fell walker, progressing from Skiddaw at 2, via the Fairfield Horseshoe at 3 to traversing the Scafells at 4. Now greyer than a Herdwick tup, I've recently developed a fastpacking style using race vests: just 5L in summer or 8L in winter.

I've generated a prolific and varied output for UK Hillwalking and The Great Outdoors, with the occasional blog on ultralight gear websites.

The ultralight innovation might appear like a bizarre party-trick or act of hipster one-upmanship. Squeezing a tent, an inflatable mat, a sleeping bag, stove and cooking pot into such a small space might seem as arbitrary as a how-many-students-in-a-Mini? challenge.

But it's proving to be an incredibly rewarding creative challenge. I'm deep into my fifties now, but this ultralight malarkey has delivered a wealth of new mountain experiences such as I've not had since my early twenties.
