Writer and journalist for 50+ years. Spent 15 years on Sunday Times, mostly during Harold Evans era, freelance since early 1980s. Often works in partnership with wife Leni. Keen hillwalker, completed Munros in 1997 (plus “new” Munros in 2010). Educated Dulwich College and University College Oxford. Lives with Leni in South London, has two children and four grandchildren.
Professional Activities
As well as writing, works as journalism trainer and consultant at a range of magazine publishers in the UK and overseas. Trained numerous journalists on the award-winning magazine Building. Chaired judging panel for consumer writer of the year at the Periodical Publishers Association awards. With Leni, runs a range of journalism and writing courses – see https://www.petergillmantraining.co.uk. Has written for most national UK newspapers and numerous magazines. Writes books and works as researcher and assistant producer in television projects. Increasingly active as journalism consultant and trainer. Outdoor books include: Everest, 80 Years of Triumph and Tragedy (anthology, 2001); The Wildest Dream, with Leni Gillman (George Mallory biography, 2000); Eiger Direct, with Dougal Haston (1966); Extreme Eiger, with Leni Gillman (2105). Plus other biographies (e.g. Alias David Bowie) and contemporary history (Collar the Lot!).
