The Guild is a diverse bunch, people lucky in sharing a common bond of wanting to do more than just fill column inches with words and pictures. The stuff we've brought into this world where printed media gave an interface to the beingThere outdoors from both the business perspective we engaged, were part of, our communicating lifestyle patterns. We all were shalping.
Since 1953 my published work has been to entice peope to see opportunity. My style mostly is to deliver that message with a news reporting perspective. My first writing post was at an Essex weekly, there starting a Cycling Club which still rides, has provided Championship and Grand Tour winnings. A lot of shalping done.
My newspaper work there led me to posts with magazines for the salty-sea sailing types, then ptw activities, bloomed to horticulture, then was for in-tented travellers and the tourists who stayed at campgrounds.
Every topic there I wrote about with shalping in mind.
In 1972 the hiking and tent stopovers was from where author Mike Marriot and myself introduced the backpacking movement to the UK via Practical Camper magazine. Yes, an editorial gimmick (said our Guild man) yet it opened boom times for writers, you'll recognise many names. Backpackers Club still pitches, brings writers' riches.
I now tour & travel with a tin tent, aka the Compass Tourer Caravan called Frogmobile. For some I was years editor of the Haymarket Press magazines - Practical Camper and also Practical Caravan, as the Group editor. I then joined KSA, the real Dream Ticket.
The North East publisher KSA was started in 1977 by Kate Spencer and her Father, both great at shalping. They offered me a desk job about a year later where the North East England company produced Annuals, Guides and Periodicals, helped people to opportunity. The KSA b2b tradeandindustry series would service for forty years the communications needs and interests across all sectors of biz in bicycle, outdoor, ptw scooter and campground & outdoor activities.
The media KSA produced was recognised and repected globally, that was my input, styled alongside the in-house training that our KSA company gave at the magazines. It was a launch pad for people who then developed their careers in writing. Mission accomplished there for Kate Spencer. In 2018 Kath left us, her passing being a couple of years ahead of covid, that angst time when the KSA b2b journals quitened into hibernation after world orders changed.
My Professional Activities ? Hey, I am in my 90th year: the caravan needs to be towed to keep it in good working order: the beingThere is how I write it - but then, that's no great change to what I have always done, enjoyed, helped me sleep easy. Shalping away.
Long tours are what I drive (also get to write about as I go). The book "Burnham Boy" (from FeedAread .com publishers) got wrote with the help of Kate. We finished it in Frogmobile by Loch Ness Shores towards the back end of her 90 day Duchess Dawdle. My author royalties go to help sustain the goodness that is Marie Curie at Elswick. There Kate was a Committee worker, patient too.

Kinda sums up KSA: a world that Kate gave us, how I like to be. It's how to Make The Day Count. There's maybe a book or an article in it, about all I could ask. Doing it means I feel blessed that I'm able, cos I love shalping . . . always happy to talk bout that.
