Short Biography
Writer and photographer since 1984, specialising in the outdoors, the countryside, walking and travel mainly in the UK, but with particular interest in Scotland and the Scottish islands; author, revision author and contributor of 100+ books including award-winning guides to the Coast-to-Coast Path, the Pennine Mountains and the Shropshire Way, and guides to the Pennine Way, the Dales Way, the Severn Way and the West Highland Way.
Specialist interest in the UK (the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Lancashire, the Scottish Islands (especially Skye, Mull, Shetland and Orkney) and the Isle of Man.
MA in Lake District Studies (with Distinction) (Sand Pilots: The History of the Guides to Morecambe Bay Sands, 1501-2008); PhD in Historical Geography (Rooms with a View: The Development of Tourist Accommodation in the Lake District, 1770-1914).
