ViewRanger works by using the internal GPS built in your phone, combined with tracking, navigation and location sharing tools that we’ve developed; all supported on your smartphone or tablet, and on the web at My.ViewRanger.com.
ViewRanger is one of the Guild’s very first Associate Members and this relationship creates some exciting opportunities for writers interested in self-publishing or promoting their work to outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
Co-Founder Craig Wareham explains that the ViewRanger app has been designed to enable users ‘to discover, plan, navigate and share their outdoor adventures’.
ViewRanger turns a smartphone into a sophisticated GPS device. The app, with all of its functionality which includes active navigation and open source mapping, is free to download. Once installed users are then able to purchase content such as mapping and trails from 400 top brands and to add their own content.
Its popularity has soared over the last twelve months and it is now used in 150 countries and has topped the app navigation charts in over 20.
Agreements with national mapping authorities offer an unrivalled collection of topographical mapping for 22 countries. Mapping is stored on the phone, so can be used without a network connection and navigation is via GPS.
For writers it offers a social platform that supports self-publishing of outdoor trail guides. Maps can be embedded into a writer’s own blog to illustrate routes and selected routes can be published and sold through the in-app map and trail shop.
